Floodwaters show geometric patterns of fields, embankments and drainage ditches. There are no farms on this flooded land, once an inlet of the sea and, at sea-level, always prone to flooding. HIgh on Scout Scar escarpment I can make out detail through binoculars but it's too distant for my camera to pick-up detail. At the head of the former inlet, where floodwaters cannot reach, there are sheep in the pastures. And they're strung out along slivers of higher ground. Embankments topped with hedges break the surface of the flood-waters. A few white shapes of swans are out on the water.
The day is warm and there are a few Large Whites on the wing, and the occasional Red Admiral. And flocks of goldfinch. Sunlight glints on water droplets in autumn grasses and drifts of heather are dull gold with a few late purple flowers. I'm admiring vistas of the Howgills to the east when I met neighbours whom I first met up here and have not seen for a while. They remind me that this time last year Brigsteer Bridge was closed and we were denied the freedom of Scout Scar.
