Skylark sing and a green woodpecker calls. Someone has seen stonechat but they are silent and do not show for me. The cloudscape is wonderful and this chiaroscuro landscape with darkness to the west and the escarpment cliff-top in full sunlight.
No fells today. The western skies are dark, the distant fells are hidden and the woods below Scout Scar escarpment are plunged into darkness, only a glimmer of light on the nearest trees. Sunlight floods down from the blue onto the escarpment, turning it winter gold. Skylark sing and a green woodpecker calls. Someone has seen stonechat but they are silent and do not show for me. The cloudscape is wonderful and this chiaroscuro landscape with darkness to the west and the escarpment cliff-top in full sunlight. The woods below Scout Scar escarpment are in winter colours, warm browns, purple, ochre and soft greys. A beam of light catches a few shadowy trees, the rest in deep gloom. No birdsong rises from the gloomy winter wood. I hope the honeybees thrive in Honeybee Wood. Signs of spring come gradually. I sense loss of numbers, remembering birdsong in these woods. I walk in glorious sunlight and blue sky is overhead. I'm not alone in marvelling at the beauty of clouds today. On Sunday 25th February there's snow on the higher fells and visibility is good. Skylark are in full song. The cloudscape is quite different, with wisps of high stratus cloud. Later, a bank of cumulus bubbles up and the clouds are splendid once again.
