In 2020, spring saw glorious weather. And lockdown found us walking from home. Scout Scar is my study area, has been for two decades. But in lockdown I spent more time than ever in this location. And made discoveries. Amongst these images of birds I photographed you'll see a curlew with a chick on Cunswick Fell and a lapwing with a fledgling on Scout Scar. I knew they were present, now I know some have bred successfully here. I took images of this same redstart on the same display perch ( an ash showing signs of ash die-back) through several weeks. The male cuckoo was vocal for some three weeks, then was silent. Impossible to know if he found mates and bred.
Spring and Summer 2020
1 August 2020. Fledgling swallows. All aboard and hoping to sail to South Africa! Making migration easy.

SPRING 2020 saw a long period of fine weather. Perfect for studying butterflies. My first photos of Green Hairstreak, said to be the only green butterfly in the UK. It was late July when I photographed this female Brimstone whose pale underwing is green, in flight she shows yellow. Several photos of butterflies mating- that's the time to photograph them, when they're settled. I've a feeling there are three dingy skippers in one mating sequence below, wings so involved it's hard to tell and it's a small butterfly. In 2o18/2019 there were small skipper. I could find none on Scout Scar, in the miccro-habitat where I knew they had been previously.
What will be the highlights of spring 2021?
