Blencathra from High Street

PictureSouth of Ullswater 16 February 2016
On a morning of biting cold we assembled at Askham and headed for Heughscar Hill along the Roman Road.  The sun lit snow cloud hovering over Blencathra and Helvellyn, and the Dodds  rose in a magic of snow and mist.  We looked across Ullswater toward the distant fells.  We came upon several stone circles, distinctive for their alignment across the landscape and because they showed up disturbance in the ground in their distinctive vegetation. All around these grassy circles were tussocks of sedge and heather.

The cloudscape was beautiful and I love the way snow-cloud hugs the fells.  During the day I took a sequence of landscape photographs, including the stone circles with a backdrop of Blencathra.
The launch of a new book is an exciting time and the first copies of Cumbrian Contrasts reached me in a special delivery some five days ago.  Apparently one of two bookshops in Cumbria have received copies already, others eagerly await it.
Cumbrian Contrasts a vision of countryside.  The book is nature writing with a strong narrative line structuring it.  A spacious layout so you can take in word and image at the same moment.  I wanted a book you can snuggle down with and read comfortably, in a contemplative way.
My publisher and her sales rep tell me that people like signed copies. So yesterday I wrote a greeting to a little dog of charming disposition, named Bracken.  Meeting friends in the neighbourhood, their dog often has to wait patiently whilst we chat. And at such times Bracken shows  good manners and not a hint of impatience . So he deserves a mention.
