Ash pollard on 28 December 2017 Snow-capped fells surrounded us on a pastoral walk which took in Cartmel Fell and Simpson Ground. We basked in sunlight whilst much of the UK saw the disruption of sudden snowfall.

Not hay bales, not boulders, but Belted Galloways. The low sun made strong shadows and confused us. How odd that three of us (before conferring) saw hay bales. Fallen trees with broken limbs look like monster-arachnids. We came upon an ash pollard, recently cropped with neat piles of branches on the ground. I have a personal map of memorable ash pollards about Cumbria. Best seen in winter light.
So, shadow-pictures. The group of us stood on a knoll - can we work out who's who from the shadows. One bizarre image distorts our shadows in a way I can't fathom. I should consult a friend who's a professor of optics for an explanation.

28th December might be a little late to come upon the perfect Christmas tree but here's the picture. An exquisite little tree, with frost -effect. And in a bed of frosted heather. Then into a magical wood that reminds me of Uccello's The Hunt, deep into the mysterious wood. So, a frost sequence.
