Compass Sport Cup and Trophy Final on Helsington Barrows and Scout Scar

PictureJudges' stand and the string course. Orienteering for children.
Kendal Race Course earned its name today. Here was a major orienteering event come to Scout Scar and Helsington Barrows.  And a clash with a hound –trailing event was imminent!  Loudspeakers warned that the hounds would race across Kendal Race Course at 12.45 pm. 'Watch where you walk, you might get flattened''-  a steward warned me. 'The fast orienteers run with their heads down, reading the map'.  If the orienteers don’t flatten you the hounds might.

In the past, Kendal Race Course saw horse racing and this rusting erection was the judges' stand. Today, the string course started here. Children  seek for orienteering controls, following a taped course.  At 12.45 pm the hound trailers would expect their usual parking space, now occupied by coaches bringing orienteers from far and wide.   I was amused to see kiddies' balloons decorating Brian Bowness’ notice about his sheep lambing. Well, in spring they might.
Odd to see a place I know intimately change its character. The usually Sunday morning peace of Scout Scar was given over to orienteering and hound trailing. The Welsh Black cattle found themselves  run around by orienteers and looked confused. What’s the rush?  A buzzard hovered over a control kite wondering what was the attraction.

Glittering prizes laid out in readiness.
Not sure what I'd do with golden running shoes. But to bring home a bottle of wine from an orienteering event would be good. Now how might I contrive that!
