Ria had tweeted Great Wood before we reached Walla Crag. I glimpsed the breath-taking beauty of Great Wood and its outlook over Derwent Water but there was neither time to go off the track into the hoar-frost bracken for close-ups of icy lichen boulders, nor for heather in frost-guise. Sparkle and chill scattered through Great Wood and I could have stayed there for hours, for a spot-lit tree high in the pallor of the hanging wood, an eminence sunlit. Up on the open fell vistas were stunning but enchantment and distinction belonged to Great Wood.
‘A copycat’ weather forecast from Louise Lear, more of the same. Sunlight from dawn to dusk through several November days.
