Marsh Helleborine at Waitby Greenriggs 5 July A week of exploration in different locations across Cumbria. There are seasonal highlights I hope to find afresh each year: flowers galore and birds too. And sensations: the fragrance of flowers in species-rich grassland at Waitby Greenriggs and Smardale and on Scout Scar. Rain is never far off during this week: rushing water resounds in a Lake District landscape and there are ribbons of cascades coming off the fells.
Waitby Greenriggs: a wealth of flowers with transient sunlight pouring through marsh helleborine, Epipactis pallustris.
Smardale: Northern Brown Argus- how tiny they are. Bloody cranesbill and geraniums various.

Scout Scar: a bank of flowers on a cloudy morning, threatening rain. Beautiful field scabious. A common blue butterfly, wings closed, shelters from the rain beneath the flower- like a displaced petal. Flowers of quaking grass. Dyer’s greenweed, Genista tinctoria, a new find here. I submit it to Natural England and it will be recorded as a first for this site.

Tilberthwaite : peregrines in a sudden clamour. Bog pimpernel, pale flowers closed , in grass beside water tracks. Bog asphodel and bog myrtle. Sound of rushing water in the landscape and ribbons of waterfalls pouring down the fells. A cascade of water down, down into a quarry where we sit looking out across deep water watching figures abseil down the rock face.
