Redpoll are restless birds. For some years I heard them each spring on Scout Scar. I could see them in flight, hear them calling to each other but they rarely settled for long. At the Foulshaw glade they sing in the tree tops and come down to the feeders where you may study them. There were several here in late December but the time to see them is when they're abundant and vocal in the breeding season. It's much easier to learn birds when you can see and hear them.
Water rail are secretive but food scattered below the feeders tempted a bird to come foraging. You rarely have such an opportunity to see plumage details and that glossy red bill.

Raven breed early, in February. On Whitbarrow and on Loughrigg we came upon pairs in courtship behaviour.
