Alder overhung the becks, thick with catkins. I love the dove-coloured leaf buds and the dark female flowers that need a hand lens to see the detail. Too tiny to show well even with macro-photography. But here goes.

![]() Daffodils were the motif of the day, in the churchyard of St John the Evangelist at Woodland, and everywhere. With the first primroses. Catkins were a delight. Having searched hazel to find female flowers amongst the male catkins, today the little red female flowers showed in abundance. Like the beadlet anemones found in rock pools. Exquisite. Skylark were singing on the fells, and I heard yellowhammer in hawthorn too distant to see. Alder overhung the becks, thick with catkins. I love the dove-coloured leaf buds and the dark female flowers that need a hand lens to see the detail. Too tiny to show well even with macro-photography. But here goes. The female flowers of alder show best on the final image. Two dark flowers appear right of the male catkins, almost in the centre of the picture.
