Scout Scar: a week-end of contrasts

PictureFresh snow on the northern fells Saturday 18 January
Fresh overnight snow on the Langdales to the west and on the northern fells. The Howgills bare.  A blue sky.  Bowfell shrugged-off cloud to reveal snow.  Veils of rain and a rainbow.
High pressure lasted into Sunday which was  all about the skies.  Aeolus, god of the winds, had been at work and the rhythms and patterns of cloud were mesmerising.  By mid-day the drama was all over and a gloom prevailed.

There was a hard frost overnight and on Sunday morning the ground was frozen,  a welcome change from the rains and mud of mid-January. Cloud-scapes were stunning. and constantly changing.  High-altitude winds were at work.  This week,  the news included an item about Aeolus- the Greek god of the winds who gives his name to a satellite which will map global weather and so make weather forecasting more accurate.
The wind is invisible to mere mortals but Aeolus, the space satellite, will use lasers to measure light at different altitudes- predicting the winds.  Over Friday night winds from the south-west met high pressure and snow fell on the Langdales.   By Sunday morning transient patterns of cloud swept the skies.
In his comment below, David Tibbett has caught the essence of the morning beautifully.

Was good to meet you at Scout Scar on Saturday. David and Margriet from Grantham. The views from the Mushroom Shelter were 360 degrees of pure delight with snow to the Cumbrian Mountains and deep shadows on the Pennines, and a watery vista down the Lythe Valley. Perfect visibility and lucky for us to be there at that particular time.
