Scout Scar with Autumn Gentian

PictureLooking west from Scout Scar escarpment
If the skies are clear tonight we'll see a super moon and a blue moon, a rare coincidence.  Today there is a clarity and brightness rarely seen over recent weeks, through a rainy July and August.
Hawthorn is laden with berries and sloes are plentiful.  On Helsington Barrows there are drifts of yellow hawkweed but scarcely a butterfly to be seen. At this season I hope to see swallows mustering. Sometimes hundreds of them will gather on trees close to the escarpment as they prepare to migrate to Africa.

During the last week I've searched for Autumn Gentian in the places where I often find the flower at this season. Over the years its distribution has become more widespread, thanks to the use of cattle as a conservation management tool.   This year, it's hard to find.  But today I found a few plants, flowers opening to the sun.
The Super Moon, the Blue Moon rose in the east.  She was huge and a warm peachy colour.  Through binoculars,  it was like looking at the globe with land-masses  mapped out.   Photographing celestial objects is a specialism and I don't have the right camera, but here she is-  a rare Blue Moon and Super Moon.   Points of light come from the town below.  In her rising she was masked, for a while, by a tall birch so I tried for spooky images of her celestial presence obscured by branches.
In every way this was an inspirational day.
